About Nicolson Highlandwear.

Following a notably successful retail career, culminating in managing one of Edinburgh’s leading Highlandwear stores of the time, Gordon Nicolson took his hard-earned skills and experience and founded his own, family-run business, NICOLSON HIGHLANDWEAR in April 2001.

Situated in a prime location, in the heart of Edinburgh’s historical Royal Mile, Nicolson’s enjoys a central location, in the midst of Edinburgh’s thriving Highlandwear retail community. Naturally, being surrounded by our competitors, we at Nicolson’s are acutely aware of the need to stay ahead of the game and are extremely proud to offer only the highest quality items, which we guarantee are solely manufactured in the United Kingdom. We do not import any goods.

Traditional skills and methods are amongst the features of our products, which are extremely dear to us. In the “global village” in which we all now live, we feel it is important to support and promote the few traditional craftsmen and UK manufacturers still around, to offer truly authentic goods whilst keeping these threatened skills and industries alive. When buying Scotland’s National Dress, would you expect it to be made anywhere other than Scotland? No? Well, neither would we! As a result, we are delighted to advise that all our kilts are handmade in Scotland, as far as possible we use local suppliers, and all our stock is UK made.

A high proportion of our everyday trade deals with outfit hires for special occasions. Our hire stock is made to the same exacting standards as our standard stock garments and is regularly renewed and replaced to ensure it always meets our high standards of comfort and presentation (please ask for details of ex-hire sale stock).

As well as hire packages, we also promote numerous outfit packages, which offer genuine reductions on our regular made to measure separates, when bought as part of an outfit.

Group orders are also a speciality here at Nicolson’s and we currently supply outfits to the Lothian & Borders police Pipeband, George Heriots Pipeband and Stirling & District Pipeband. The commitment we have to these orders is full and ongoing, and no job is deemed to be too large or too small!

Another aspect of our business is our Tartan Design and Registration service. This service is personally completed by Gordon, and includes detailed consultation to discuss your requirements. Some organisations that we have recently designed for include The University of Edinburgh, The Knights Templar, The Pink Ball (Edinburgh) and, most entertainingly, The Ladyboys of Bangkok! We are also stockists of London Scottish Rugby Tartan.

We constantly review our products to ensure that we offer the most comprehensive ranges at the most competitive prices possible. However should you require something special, not carried in our normal ranges, we are only too happy to go that little bit further to meet your needs. As we are in constant contact with the best suppliers in the Industry, nothing should be impossible!

We are part of the St Kilda group who own several  UK  companies that manufacturer the following:  

Jackets, trews, kiltmaking, shoes, hose, clan crested products, sgian dubh,s, kilt pins, belt buckles, belts, sporrans, bagpipes and piping accesories.

We are based in Edinburgh on the historic Royal Mile which links Edinburgh Castle with Holyrood House and we are within a few hundred yards of the new Scottish Parliament building.  We specialise in offering a personal service to all customers - both locally in Edinburgh and Internationally.  We have many years experience in Highlandwear and can offer expert advice on every aspect - choosing a Highland outfit, which tartans are appropriate, the correct accessories for a given outfit and occasion, and how to correctly wear the kilt.  We are here to help - contact us by email or telephone for a fast and friendly reply!

Ordering

The catalogue section of our site is hosted on a secure server and all credit card details are sent to us in encrypted format and can only be decrypted by our servers. Payment for goods is not taken until they are ready for despatch, which is normally within 72 hours (excludes made to measure items such as Kilts and Jackets).

If the item you have ordered is out of stock or awaiting casting, you will be notified by e-mail within 72 hours and you will have the option to have the goods placed on back order or to cancel the order.

Carriage

For small orders we ship by registered post in the UK and Swift Air Recorded to the US (5-7 day service).

For larger orders we have accounts with all the major carriers, including UPS, DHL and Parcel Force and we will ship using the most cost effective method for your area..

We ship large quantities of goods with all the carriers, through Viking Technology and other parts of our business and as such have negotiated highly competitive discount rates. These discounts are passed across to you, the customer and we charge only the cost price of shipping the goods.

Pricing

Whilst all prices on our site are quoted in US dollars, your card will be debited in UK pounds Sterling. Due to fluctuating exchange rates, the price may differ slightly on your statement.

Returns Policy

If for any reason you are unsatisfied with the quality of your goods, we offer a full refund policy. Exludes items which require special order material for kilts and other clan crested product made specially to order.
